Leonard Peltier is a citizen of the Anishinabe & Dakota Nations who has been unjustly imprisoned for over 34 years. To the international community, Peltier's case is a stain on America’s human rights record. Amnesty International considers Peltier a “political prisoner” who should be “immediately & unconditionally released”. To many Indigenous Peoples, Peltier is a symbol of the abuse & repression they have endured for so long. A member of the American Indian Movement, Peltier was wrongfully convicted in 1977 in connection with the deaths of two agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). In 1985 & again in 1992, before the U.S. Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals & when faced with proof of Peltier’s innocence, the government admitted that it did not & can not prove Peltier’s guilt. However, despite the courts' acknowledgment of FBI and prosecutorial misconduct in the case, Peltier has been imprisoned since 1976
A talented artist, Leonard Peltier often donates his artwork to human rights & social welfare organizations such as Trail of Hope(a Native American conference dealing with drug & alcohol addiction); World Peace & Prayer Day; the First Nation Student Association; & the Buffalo Trust Fund. Leonard Peltier has been widely recognized for his humanitarian works & has won the North Star Frederick Douglas Award; Federation of Labour (Ontario, Canada) Humanist of the Year Award; Human Rights Commission of Spain International Human Rights Prize; 2004 Silver Arrow Award for Lifetime Achievement; & the First Annual Red Nation Humanitarian Award in 2009. Also in 2009, Leonard Peltier was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for the sixth consecutive year.
